Free EU roaming

Eu roaming charges seem to be very much on the way back for UK customers. As many of us in the UK will now be returning, or thinking of returning, to international travel as covid restrictions ease, is it time for government action on this to compel these companies to remove these unjustified charges?

Good topic to raise, I am about to embark on my first foreign holiday in nearly three years but like to think it won't cost me the earth to keep in touch with family ... come on Three, start a new trend and don't charge us when we're abroad!

Extremely good topic as I am facing a few months work in the EU while I am still live in the UK. After a few months my current contract expires and I will be charged for roaming. I should say welcome to Brexit however don't want to be political I rather want to find a solution. Imagine more and more people working from abroad and instead of thinking about the future and how new workforce come alive its like being thrown back to the stone age. What would you do? How would you change? Maybe we can do some brainstorming 🙂

Honestly I don’t understand how data roaming works. I just try to use Wi-Fi whenever I can!

I think it strange we should go from no charges, straight back to charges, even if they are capped. It needs to be clear before you use your device abroad, what charges you may incur. I look back fondly, when it was not an issue

The lack of roaming charges made staying connected when travelling so much easier in the past years and it is such a pity that we now seem to be taking steps back. Hopefully, new packages can be made available that solve this problem.

We all new that this was likely to happen when our oven ready Brexit was delivered. It's probably a form of tax evasion, or avoidance, by the networks as many are not UK owned. The overseas owners can transfer funds from the UK and not pay UK tax on the income. It's akin to an offshore company charging its UK business millions for the use of the logo.

What can or will the government do? Nothing as most of the mobile companies are foreign owned and they can syphon as much costs as they like from the UK company so it has no profits to tax. Take away their licences, contractual nightmare. Ban them from bidding when the spectrum license comes up for renewal. I am not sure if the mobile companies spectrum licenses are perpetual.

Buy a SIM in the country you are going to and leave a message on you UK SIM giving out the new local number. We used to do that before free roaming.

Roaming charges are back after years of free Feel at Home roaming, 3 Mobile must be able to offer a better package for roaming customers? I would suggest a fixed amount per month to cover all roaming charges in Feel at Home countries, maybe £10 per month? This is urgent.

I've been with Three for 10+ years now. I've had to recently change my tariff, because they were getting rid of older ones (which I was on), which means I lose all of my benefits, like the not having to pay for Roaming! (You don't have to pay if your contract started before a certain date.) I'm a bit annoyed by this and actually thought twice about not taking out a new contract with Three. In this climate, Three really should be thinking about ways to keep customers instead of turning them away.

I agree that something should be put into place here (ideally have it free again!) - I wonder if the £10 a month can be taken on/off or added when needed because some people might not travel all the time?

Just buy cheap burner sim or get an E sim download, you can get 30gb for under a tenner and a months usage

That is a good question as I am planning to visit family in the USA in July and want to be able to use my phone and data and not come back home to a huge surprise bill. I would be gutted if that happened. 😑

This is good to know because I am planning on seeing my family in the USA in July and don't want to end up with a massive bill at the end of the holiday. I might just get a PAYG SIM and top it up and use that while I am out there.

We need someone with some knowledge of how the mobile companies charge each other for roaming. Is there an actual cost involved for the networks or is it a way of making extra profit? Considering that all of these processes must be automated I cannot see what costs are involved other than additional wear and tear on the network infrastructure.

Maybe we need to go back to the old days and buy a cheap SIM when we get there. Amazon Spain sells a 25Gb card for 18 Euro so I imagine there must be cheap cards available for other EU countries. Not sure about the US as their mobile charges are high.

Moderator, please note that I am not trying to be too intense, whatever that means.
