Why is it since 3 merged with whatever phone company recently, has the signal gone to rats**t?! Can barely get signal in the house or out n about in my home town, mobile data is shockingly terrible. Defo sacking these numpties off once contract expires. Service is nowhere near good enough.

It's disappointing to hear that your signal has deteriorated. The merging of the networks is designed to improve service, so it is likely a coincidence that you've noticed a drop around the same time.
Please have a look at the Coverage and Network Status checker, as this might help shed some light on if there are any known issues or planned work taking place currently.
If this doesn't offer any clarity, please pop through to Customer Services, who will be able to complete some extra checks and run through options for your account.
