Losing Mobile Number?

We live in US but travel 2 or 3X a year to UK and EU. We have a 3UK mobile account and pay-as-you-go for each trip. We've registered our account to keep the number. But we only top-up when we travel. Lately we received a notice that our service would expire if we did not add a top-up. So we did but the plan expires in a few days as it was only good for a month.  Will we lose our number if we let the plan expire?   Thanks.

You must make a call/ send SMS every 180 days to keep number alive.
Otherwise number will go back into the pool and get reallocated.
