Using my own router

Hi

I was having trouble connecting to YouTube app on my home cinema projector. It would say "Unable to load requested page" so I tried using my mobile phone connected as a hotspot to the projector and I am able to access YouTube via the built in app.

I contacted customer support and asked if they could send me a different model router which they said no for some reason?

So I bought a second-hand  UNLOCKED HUAWEI H112-370 5G WIFI 6 ROUTER from eBay and low and behold I am able to access YouTube on my home projector!

I have set up the APN as three.co.uk and couldn't find any other setting to adjust. Everything works fine, I am getting a strong 5G signal BUT first thing when I get up in the morning the router is not indicating a 5G signal. Only 4G. If I restart the router it goes back to 5G.

Am I doing something wrong?

Edit: 3 did send me a replacement router of the same model ZTE MC888A and I still had the same problem!

Hi, do you have any other devices that are on Three and have 5G connection?  The reason I ask is that there have been questions on other forums suggesting that Three might turn off 5G over night to save power when there is lower demand on the network.  Another thing to look at is in your router config, is there an automatic reboot set?  You can often specify a time the router reboots and if you configured it to do so just before you wake up, it might save you the time of having to do it manually.  Just a suggestion.

I have about 6-7 devices connected to my router. some are on constant like my doorbell and security cameras. The idea of Three turning off 5G over night is ridiculous. Anyway, I have cancelled my contract with Three and gone with Smarty as it is a lot cheaper. 🙂

Never seen it myself, but it warranted a thread on ISP Review -

SMARTY is a trading name of Hutchison 3G UK Limited, so is basically Three.  Uses the same masts as Three and you will probably see the same cutting out at night you initial reported ☹️

Why cut out a 5G signal? to save costs? this is 2025! that is what you pay for surely? besides, I'm sure many people use 5g for gaming during the night hours and other work? Yes. Smarty is the same network, but I tell you now, I have had a constant 5G signal since replacing my SIM with a Smarty one!
