MTU for XBOX live mutliplayer gaming on 5g home broadband

Fledgling

I am struggling to get my Xbox to work on Xbox live. Doing some googling it seems that the MTU is too low, it is 1360 and should be about 1385 to be able to work properly. I have rung three who seem to have no knowledge of what an MTU is and have sent me to the ombudsman. I have logged into the router (H122-373) and increased the MTU manually however it will not pull through onto my XBOX. I have put it in the DMZ, enabled UPNP and generally faffed with it as much as i can but the MTU on the XBOX does not change. I am assuming this is what is being sent from three and so it is something to be changed at three's end...

Does anyone else have any experience of this, or have any issues with XBOX live and home broadband 5g? or can they get it to work, cheers

Hi @Woz69,

Sorry to hear that you're running into this issue too. It doesn't seem to relate to a specific model of router, so it seems likely to be a signal or mast issue causing this. If you check our Network Status Checker is it showing any local issues? Are you able to test your router SIM, or any other Three SIM on hotspot?

My xbox360 can’t connect to the internet; we have three home 4g broadband. I took the Xbox to friends house and it worked perfectly, just as it always did before we switched to three’s service.

Hey Jonathan,

Any update?

I've not tried what you've suggested as the very next post  (Jordamxd95) pretty much covered all of it.

I think by now you must realise that this is becoming a massive issue and I'm hope that three will be coming up with a fix pretty quick. I must admit and don't get me wrong you are reaching out to people which is great but its starting feel like as a service provider your really NOT providing the service we all signed up for? And I'm thinking as a good will that three should be offering compensation and not charging us for this service until this issue gets resolved, because nothing talks better that money and I'm pretty sure if the above happened then this issue would get resolved pretty quick.

Many thanks

I agree with you, because the connection was so bad they allowed me to cancel my contract for free. So even their own support can see its an issue worth offering free cancellation and compensation for yet they aren't able to fix the issue. Hopefully they see that I'm not the only one cancelling and that with more cancellations and more money lost they may actually turn to look at fixing the issue.

I'm getting the same issue I've narrowed it down to being something three server related I've tried port forwarding, manually changing the mtu,  diffrent router, tethering off my phone which did work but now is giving me the same issue as I'm with I'd and they use three masts but the problem is not only on the xbox console it's self if I load the xbox app on my pc or my phone I can't connect to any xbox party's and it just says connecting then disconnects giving me an mtu error the only way I've been able to get online is by constantly changing to an alternative port on the xbox settings keep clicking random ones and trying to join party's which takes anywhere from 1 min to an hour just keep trying random ports three have blamed xbox I spoken to them they said its a broadband issue which I already knew If I tried some else's wifi who isn't with three or put a non three sim in the modem it works fine

That's interesting.  Have you found a proper solution yet?

Our Xbox wouldn't connect using the Three router (it's a 5G Zyxel NR5103e) yet when we tethered it to a mobile phone using ID Mobile (who sit on Three) it worked.  No idea why though.

@JonathanB any updates at all?

Still waiting on my phone call back from Three, I was told I would be contacted within a week. It's been close to a month I believe. I agree with SilentBird. It is getting worse.

Has anyone tried enabling UPnP on the routers? I can see on my Zyxel router it's disabled by default. How about the ZTE and Huawei routers?

Network Setting > Home Networking > UPnP

Some router manufacturers like TP-Link have UPnP enabled by default.

UPNP is enabled on my router for my xbox and I still have the same issue. Only benefit is my NAT Type stays open rather than moderate but still unfortunately does not affect the MTU issue.
