MTU for XBOX live mutliplayer gaming on 5g home broadband

I am struggling to get my Xbox to work on Xbox live. Doing some googling it seems that the MTU is too low, it is 1360 and should be about 1385 to be able to work properly. I have rung three who seem to have no knowledge of what an MTU is and have sent me to the ombudsman. I have logged into the router (H122-373) and increased the MTU manually however it will not pull through onto my XBOX. I have put it in the DMZ, enabled UPNP and generally faffed with it as much as i can but the MTU on the XBOX does not change. I am assuming this is what is being sent from three and so it is something to be changed at three's end...

Does anyone else have any experience of this, or have any issues with XBOX live and home broadband 5g? or can they get it to work, cheers

The only fix I have found is to set the router to 4g only. My speed goes from 150 to 26 but I know with these speeds games are playable.

After trying several different things static ip>add to dmz, port forwarding etc with no joy. I've resolved the issue described on my son's xbox series s by enabling UPnP in the router's settings, then by selecting a different port on the xbox the NAT type went from strict to open and issue is resolved - You may have to try a few different ports, luckily it was the first port I tried!  Hope this helps 🙂

Mate iv'e tried everything, nothing works. One minute my NAT is open, i'll check it again and it will change to moderate. This is on Three, the network is not fit for Xbox gaming.

Right i've had enough. My problem has spread to joining multiplayer games now, and i didn't sign up for this. Can anyone pls let me kno the best way to go about cancelling my new sub? I do not have a Three mobile and do not want to spend anymore money on wasting time calling support. I advise anybody wishing to partake in online gaming to totally avoid Three, as the service provided is not fit for purpose.

Hi, i have been using Three 5g for a week now and while i am very pleased with my DL speeds, i cannot join people in xbox live party chat. The xbox says i have an mtu problem also. I have tried port forwarding, putting my xbox in the dmz and turning off the firewall but nothing works.

For anyone interested, if you call their support team a few times within a week complaining about the issue and repeating the issue you have with your console, you will be given the opportunity to cancel your contract for free. This has worked for me and whilst maybe there isn't a fix, the more people that cancel the more they'll notice.

Hey guys, I've now run into the same MTU problem🤦🏻‍♂️ I've had my 4g ZTE router for around 10 months and not had any issues, but just over the last 2 weeks I've been having issues getting into xbox party chat and games lobbies, and when I check my xbox setting its telling me I have MTU issue. Now from what I've been reading in this feed it sound like this has been an issue for a while and three need to pull there finger and resolve it.

I do also have a BT router in the house and that never displays a MTU problem when Im connected to it.

Also, I've always had an issue with UPNP, the xbox tells me UPnP not successful, is there anywhere in the ZTE router setting to turn this on? it's never caused an issue but neither had the MTU

Hi @Woz69,

Sorry to hear that you're running into this issue too. It doesn't seem to relate to a specific model of router, so it seems likely to be a signal or mast issue causing this. If you check our Network Status Checker is it showing any local issues? Are you able to test your router SIM, or any other Three SIM on hotspot?

My xbox360 can’t connect to the internet; we have three home 4g broadband. I took the Xbox to friends house and it worked perfectly, just as it always did before we switched to three’s service.

Hey Jonathan,

Any update?

I've not tried what you've suggested as the very next post  (Jordamxd95) pretty much covered all of it.

I think by now you must realise that this is becoming a massive issue and I'm hope that three will be coming up with a fix pretty quick. I must admit and don't get me wrong you are reaching out to people which is great but its starting feel like as a service provider your really NOT providing the service we all signed up for? And I'm thinking as a good will that three should be offering compensation and not charging us for this service until this issue gets resolved, because nothing talks better that money and I'm pretty sure if the above happened then this issue would get resolved pretty quick.

Many thanks
