I've had 5G Three Home Broadband since January 2022 and it has all worked fine until May 2023.  Since then apart from a generally unreliable network connection and reduced speeds, my main gripe has to be connecting to my works VPN.  I just cannot make a reliable VPN connection - even when the general state of the network seems fine.

The upload speed on VPN is so low it is unusable. While not connected to VPN the speeds may show 30Mbps download & 8Mbps upload.  When connected to VPN the upload speed drops to less than 0.5Mbps.

I can use the same laptop in another location using a different broadband provider with no discernible reduction in speed when connected to VPN.  Anyone else experienced this and found a resolution ? Thanks.

@JonathanB

I have the same problem. It started end October. My Three 4G internet connection is fine. But I can't use my work VPN to wfh. Very frustrating as this has been working just fine for 10 months.

I now have to hotspot from my mobile (another network) which works fine.

Please PLEASE help!

Have you found a fix/solution? I haven't managed to get anything useful from Three yet and no reply to my post @JonathanB . I was advised there are network upgrades taking place in my area, but this doesn't look like an upgrade to me!

I'm having the same issues, on PC.

On the SAME network, My android connects using the same VPN (IPVanish)

@JonathanB Hi - I use Palo Alto Global Protect at work.  When connected my download speeds are fine for a VPN (I understand some loss is to be expected) (~100Mbps).  But upload is throttled / stuck at 2Mbps.

Once you disconnect the VPN speeds go back to behaving normally.  For me, this is ~200-400Mbps download and ~70-90Mbps upload.

So using a VPN isn't an issue - connections are fine and can be made - for me it is the speed (similar to the OP).  And it isn't like I'm hitting the peak of what I can use, it is hitting this invisible ceiling and just stuck.  As I say, 2Mbps upload for Global Protect.  Consistantly.

It is actually a Smarty 5G SIM in the outdoor router, but connects over the three network.  I've changed the APN from three.co.uk to 3internet.  This made no difference.  And I also have IPv6 disabled already.  Router is a Zyxel NR7101.

Happy to get involved with anyone at your end to investigate this further.

Thanks.

Hi @Nodster84,

Thanks for the insight here. Just to check so you don't have any Three UK SIM at the moment? Although Smarty use our core network all the accounts are on different systems, so we can't directly access them as Three support teams. Have you made Smarty aware of the issue too?

Thanks,
Jonathan

Hi, I'm not able to connect with a Palo Alto / GlobalProtect VPN since 15 August

Hi @pbrown23,

Can you help me understand the issue you're encountering in a bit more detail? Is this stopping you from connecting to the VPN whatsoever, or are you intermittently being disconnected every few minutes for example?

Thanks,
Jonathan

Hi,

It wouldn't connect at all, but I set a manual APN as in the above link and that seems to work.

Thanks!

Hi everyone,

Can you let me know if the thread info inFYI : IPv6 Prevented VPN Connection helps sort your issues connecting to VPNs?

Thanks,
Jonathan
