I have almost a year to go on my contract. this is my first contract so very naïve with these things.
My phone has been awful from the start but I didn't know any better as had nothing to compare it to. its only last week both my daughter and my granddaughter tried to use it and said this is so hard to make respond to anything they told me it should not be like that I have to keep tapping over and over to get any repose Im always having to reboot.
Any advice on what my options are please?

Try googling make, model and symptoms to see if they are common and if anyone can offer a solution. If it's still under warranty you can always contact the supplier or Redmi.
It would also help to give the model number.

Redmi phones are usually very good, I have one myself, like sc1999 says can you give us the model number
