3g on the new routers

Narrowboatboy

We travel around the country on our narrowboat. We use the current huawei router. In most places we get a good signal from the 4g transmitters. Some places, like the England /Wales border, have poor coverage but 3g is really good. No problem with the Huawei router as you can easily switch it over using their app. Do the two new three routers, 5g and 4g work with 3g? Or is it as their names suggest they only work with 4g or 5g.

Hi @Narrowboatboy,

Great question! In terms of the current range both our 4G MiFi and home router can connect to 4G + 3G.

In terms of the 5G broadband, these devices connect to 5G + 4G but I can't see any specifications listing that they will be able to use the older 3G signal unfortunately.

I appreciate this can be more difficult figuring out what home service will be best when you're on the move a lot, so you may find it helpful to try multiple postcodes in the availability checker of our Home Broadband shop page.

That checker looks at multiple factors such as signal strength, network capacity, and the current number of users and will confirm if we expect 4G and/or 5G broadband to be suitable in the location you check.

Hope this helps,
JonathanB

Hello JonathanB

Thanks for your reply.

That's clears it up. I will get the 4G router when I renew my contract in the new year.

Do you know how you change from 4G to 3G. Do you use an app like you do with the Huawei router?

Cheers

Hello.

Routers have an administration page which allows you to change settings and access information about the routers. These can be accessed through an app if the router in question has one, or through a web browser.

Each router is slightly different and sometimes the web page you need to visit in order to access it is different, but each device has a user manual that explains how to do it so that you will know what to do when the time comes.

Pete.
