MC888 stalling on download

RMS1
Fledgling

Hi, I have had a ZTE MC888 5G router for 18 months, in a fringe 5G area. Careful positioning gets me 5G most of the time, so I was happy to get the faster speeds for 90% of the time, putting up with 4G for some of the time.
However, for the past few weeks I have only been able to get 4G, and there's a strange 'stalling' of downloading speed, down to 0kb/s for up to 30 second or so every couple of minutes.
If I put the same SIM card in my previous Huawei B535 4G router it is stable and works well, though obviously only on 4G.
So, in trying to find out why the MC888 was playing up, I eventually forced it to select "4G Only" in the Network Selection, which made the 4G stable.
If I change it back to 4G/5G, it starts stalling again, though it always appears to stay on 4G.
While it is doing this the upload is fine, according to the web interface.
If I set up a ping -t to www.google.com, it shows timeouts every couple of minutes for about 30 seconds, as it had shown on the web interface.
I'm pretty sure it's the MC888 at fault, but can't get support to see that - they are blaming poor signal, saying I shouldn't try to use 5G as I am in a fringe area.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Software update is at B9, by the way, and factory reset doesn't help.
Thanks.
