Sim-free purchase in store

If you are already a Three customer on a sim-only plan, why are you charged £10 for a "top-up" in store when buying a handset outright?

Why can't this be waived?

Because you’re starting a new separate account with Three which requires credit to be added to allow you to use that account. It’s your choice whether or not to buy a new handset and has no bearing on things.

I'm not starting a new separate account.

The one and only account is my sim-only contract.

The (new) handset would be an outright purchase, to use with my existing sim-only contract.

So, why a mandatory £10 top-up? It serves no purpose, and 10 quid just vanishes into thin air.
