Scam calls from people claiming to be 3

Hatshepsut
Fledgling

Keep getting calls from this number: 03333381017 - by people with "offers" for my 3 plan. They are very persistent and I have good reasons to think they're scammers but just wanted to be certain they're not some overzealous subcontractors working for 3.

Hi everyone,

We notice quite a few replies on this topic include the phone numbers being called from. Please don't post 01, 02, or 07 numbers onto public forums. In most cases these are going to be "spoofed" numbers, and the scammers are faking the number. The numbers being shared could be real personal or small business numbers owned by individuals who have no part in the scam.

Please feel free to share your experiences here, it's good feedback to help us understand scammers and spammer activity, and hopefully the advice here will help protect others too.

When it comes to the phone numbers they're using please report this securely by sending the word CALL to 7726, then you'll be prompted on the reply to send over the number which called you. You can forward suspicious texts to 7726 too.

If you have a look at our Fraud to watch out for, and Report a problem pages, you'll find lots of help and guidance on how to report scams and suspected fraud with Three and other organisations.

Thanks,
Jonathan

I have the same thing from 02*********. Should I trust this number? Usually if something is too good to be true then it probably isn’t.
3 can you please confirm if this is genuine or a scam?

Hey SailorT,

We'd never call from an 020 number. Please don't give out any information and block the number. If you're ever unsure of any numbers calling, you can get in touch with our Customer Service Team who'll be able to check if this has been from Three.

We have a dedicated page for anything to look out with this kind of Fraud.

I had a call come through from "John Smith Tyres", 01*********, claiming to be Three. I hang up almost immediately and reported it, but how can they call using the number from what looks like a legit other business?

Hi @koevoet045,

I'm sorry to hear this. If you check out our Fraud to watch out for page, there's more info on how to report this. There's also a section on spoofing there.

Essentially the scammers are using software to fake the number they're calling from, they don't actually have access to the number that is displaying, so it's extra important these days to not take a cold call on face value.

It's best not to share numbers on the Community, as you've mentioned, the number is belongs to another victim of the scam, and it's their personal data. I can confirm that Three never uses 01/02/07 numbers to call customers though.

Thanks,
Jonathan

I also had scam calls purporting to be from Three offering a great discount on contract, who could give my address and bank details, send Three verification codes and also I got the Three notification that my email had been changed.  Numbers 0122******* 07782****** and 03333381001 came up on my call history.

Hi @nearly_scammed,

I'm sorry to hear you've also received these calls. I've removed the mobile/landline numbers from the post, as these are usually "spoofed" this means that there may be a real UK number, which the usually overseas, scammers are faking the call from. We don't call from 01/02/07 numbers, please report these calls using the advice on our Fraud to watch out for page.

Our staff wouldn't be offering you details like addresses or bank info, and in terms of receiving a code they may have been simultaneously calling or chatting with customer services to trigger this. Given you've mentioned they already seemed to have info about you, and that you received notifications about an email chnage, and particularly if you did confirm a passcode with them, I'd recommend to follow the steps here on the Report a problem page

Thanks,
Jonathan
