4G Broadband contract coming to an end - Can I sign up to 5G as new customer and still use 4G?

Poolio
Fledgling

I've been a 4G Home Broadband user for 4 years now and the contract is coming to the end. I'm very happy with the service and got an email from Three telling me I could upgrade for £5 less than I'm currently paying. I tried to do this upgrade online but it kept giving a higher price. Went onto live chat which was a painful experience and took forever so I gave up.

In the meantime though it got me thinking after seeing deals on cashback sites that it'd be better to be a new customer and get cashback of £75+ plus a saving of £5 plus per month and a new hub. I'd love to get 5G also but it isn't available here so I am only being offered 4G for 2 more years, but what if 5G becomes available? I don't want to be trapped and have to pay a hefty upgrade which I've been reading about on these forums.

I know a local postcode where 5G is available, wouldn't it be better for me to use this to upgrade and be on a 5G contract for the same price as a 4G one for 2 years? If 5G is not available does a 5G hub use a 4G signal instead? If this is the case then I would be better off getting a 5G hub connecting via 4G but that is ready if and when 5G becomes available in my area?

As the hubs plug in anywhere and connects to an available signal I presume it is ok to get a 5G hub in case I use elsewhere and 5G is available in that area?

Hi @Poolio,

Sorry to hear that you couldn't sort out your upgrade online or on chat, there's also a phone number for Broadband on our contact us page, so hopefully if you give them a call they'll be able to help get this on track.

I totally appreciate where you're coming from in looking for a 5G hub to use in the meantime till there's coverage, but my understanding is that as we lease 5G hubs, and they're quite expensive so we don't usually supply them unless they're actually being used in a 5G area.

You could check with the team if we think the outdoor 5G hub will be appropriate. This can attach to a window, wall, pipe, or pole, so it potentially gives 5G in areas where indoor coverage isn't available.

Thanks,
Jonathan
