Intermittent connection issues loading/changing site- secure connection failed/site can't be reached

Is anyone else occasionally getting a 'connection down' error from Chrome (or 'Secure Connection Failed' from Firefox) when changing page - if I hit refresh it works fine. At first I wondered if it was the site I was using but have noticed it on multiple different major websites over the past couple of months and not noticed it from other locations where I don't use Three Broadband so does seem to be related to the router/connection (this is via wired Ethernet too, so not a WiFi problem).  I've tried changing DNS server in case that helps but no difference.

It mainly seems to happen when trying to first load a site or (annoyingly) at checkout when a different site is being loaded as part of the checkout process.  It certainly doesn't happen everytime but does happen with reasonable frequency.  I've also noticed I often get it when trying to pull/push from/to Github too and have to do so a number of times for it to work (browsing the Github website works fine).

I'm using a NR5103E with Firmware Version V1.00(ACBJ.0)b14 - I tried rebooting it but to no effect.

If your clients connect to that router with the VPN connection then I don't see why not. I considered similar but I don't have a router that can do VPN and the available machine to run such software is over a crappy power line adapter which would hurt performance even more than currently

Debugging call?? Does that mean some progress is being made.. or at least the issue is being looked into?

Let us all hope so
I will not place any bets on it but I am at least hopeful

Yes I was contacted and volunteered but because I also work when the call was scheduled I was second preference. I really hope something good comes of it.

I'm curious, who it was that assisted Three with the tracing and debugging call today? Was there anything other users could also replicate (commands, URLs to visit, etc) that would also help as I think more data from different parts of the country would also help.

I was on the call with Three yesterday. They did a live trace of my connection while I connected to sites that work and don't work. (I used https://royalmail.com as the main failing one that doesn't work as I get failures about 30% of the time).

They said they had captured all the data they needed. They said they would go away to analyse it and once that was done they would come back to us with the results.

I didn't get a timeframe for when that would be, but I hope we'll hear something this week. I'm seeing this problem across multiple sites so I really hope they are able to resolve it, otherwise I'll have to start looking elsewhere.

I've still been running a script to check the top 100 sites plus a few mentioned on this thread. I have had this issue over the last 48hrs with the following:

  • royalmail.com
  • duckduckgo.com
  • gmpg.com
  • ghcr.io
  • gitlab.com
  • wordpress.org
  • amazon.com
  • t.me
  • s3.amazonaws.com
  • web.archive.org
  • <my test site: hosted AWS>
  • microsoft.com
  • aws.amazon.com
  • s.w.org
  • mozilla.org
  • imdb.com
  • ted.com
  • oracle.com

(This isn't exhaustive as I've also seen issues with other sites while I'm browsing around)

Okay hopefully that helps. I assume you're using their DNS, otherwise it's somewhat concerning they can see the sites you are visiting that easily

Three does not allow you to use your own DNS provider as far as I can tell but VPNs and WARP do allow you to use a different DNS provider

Thanks for doing that @toaster - I was offered, however I was unable to do so due to being work.

Curious do you guys get this when trying to launch the xbox app?  At first I thought it was my gaming pc, being first time tried to use it in eons.  It was broke a while ago but couldnt be bothered to look at it.  This loops in circles over and over when try again.  At first I thought it was my PC, but realised my kids pcs are doing exactly the same too - and not a single game on gamepass has worked for them etc in some time.....so I'm wondering if its similar to file downloads in chrome where it just wants to restart over and over (nb:  tried all the usual registry and powershell fixes and MS store fixes.  Not too bothered as dont fancy playing any MS gamepass games for the past few months and dont fancy the mammoth task of wiping my games PC - but if its linked I can see that being a huge problem for some
